I summitted Mt Baden-Powell 8 1/2 months ago and barely made it out alive. (see my original log here: https://socialhiker.net/hike_log/fateful-hike-up-snow-ice-mt-baden-powell/)
This time, after much healing and a couple of hikes already under my belt, I hiked this mountain again, this time with a friend, without snow and ice on the trail, and with a satellite phone linked to friends and family back home and an SOS button. Fortunately I didn't need it this time.
Call it a recon mission. I wanted to see where I was airlifted out by LASD's Air Rescue 5, and the true extent and magnitude of my fall last January. My friend and I did some Class 3 scrambling up the slope where I slid down, and realized just how steep it was (later determined to average 50% grade). Along the scrambling I happened to find the thermos I lost!
We eventually made it back to the trail and resumed our hike. It was spectacular, as always. I was disappointed not to see a flag waving at the top, but we took some great summit selfies nonetheless. I also noticed the sign for the Wally Waldron tree was gone, but I'm not sure if this is already known and old news.
I didn't do this for redemption, or closure, not even to retrieve the items I've lost (although it was cool to find my thermos); I love this hike and I'll do it again and again. I wanted to legit finish this particular one toward my #sixpackofpeaks goal. Five down, one more to go!
