Started at noon, took a detour to see Sturtevant Falls and had to backtrack to get back on the Upper Falls trail to the peak. Part of the pass above the falls was a very narrow traverse and misstepping could result in a steep fall, but for the most part, the trail was easily navigable, though it did get rocky and the dirt loose in some parts. No special equipment is needed to complete this hike.
The trail up and down was mostly shaded, and the temperature was high 60s/low 70s all day. The gnats were swarming from just above the falls to the peak and most of the way down, but fortunately I had a Junk scarf that I used to partially cover cover my face.
Because of the current SoCal heat, there are fire restrictions in effect. Also, pay attention to the signs–it's very easy to get off course, especially on the Winter Creek Trail heading back down.
Cosmic Cafe was closed (they are only open on weekends), so I didn't really linger up top. The peak has an observatory and astronomical museum.
