This hike is rated difficult~be prepared. The challenge for us was more about the heights and exposure to steep drop-offs than the distance or elevation gain. The first 1/3 of the trail is a well-maintained scrabbly trail with lots of placed rock steps. A steep, steady assent to the saddle, then get ready to rock climb. We found the assent on the rocks challenging but fun, with hand-holds and well marked route. The upping was actually much more challenging for us than the downing. But the whole spine of Camelback was a kick! We will never view this glorious Phoenix landmark the same way, as now we know what it looks like up close, and how hard we worked to reach the summit. It was a gorgeous 65′ day. The trail will be heavily trafficked; note that uphill hikers have the right of way! I was disappointed how many folks think it is fine to rush down aside an uphill hiker, creating a hazard on narrow, rocky ledges. One can better spare 45 seconds to allow another hiker safe passage.
Parking is about 1/2 mile from the trailhead, so we got some bonus points for the extra mile round trip just to get to the trailhead, located in a highly exclusive residential area. Wowzers~the homes!!
Overall, this hike is a feat and a feast for the eyes. Weekday recommended. Water and sturdy shoes, a must. No facilities.
