Since I'm from Tucson I stayed the night in Mesa to get a start at 6:30 AM. Was gunning for 6 AM when the park opens but slept through alarm…. Hardly anyone on the trail. 2 other groups started around the same time. Longer walk from parking area to actual trail than envisioned. Maybe a half mile. Logged nearly 2 miles total before things got really interesting. Slick rock area was fun and ended up signaling the start of the “rock climbing” and most difficult part. Took a significant amount of time to do the last half mile or so up. Ended up spending about 3o minutes on top to eat and to rest. Took around 2:15 or so to get to the top. About the same time to get down. Was in the shade the whole way up. Mostly sun on the way down. A relative ton of people coming up between 10 and noon, which seemed crazy to me if doing the whole thing. Definitely agreed with comments on All Trails. Took typical 2L of water in pack, but brought another large bottle that fit in pack and was just barely enough water, even with shade. I add electrolyte tabs to my water as well. Hiking shoes and gloves a must in my opinion. Definitely top two of the hardest hikes in this challenge in my opinion. On par with Picacho, but ~twice as long. Kind of a mix of Picacho and Camelback.
