Due to a late start I had to park out on Baldy Road instead of the parking lot in Icehouse Canyon and I didn't get started until around 0900H. Despite the late start, the weather was good, and it was an excellent hike. One thing I did notice due to the late start was that most dayhikers were already on their way down by noon. When I got to the summit around 1400H, there was no line of hikers waiting for their photo to be taken at the rock, nor at the higher true summit although there were other day hikers at the top. Most of the hikers heading up at noon or later were backpackers who intended to spend overnight at the summit for the excellent high-end front row seat to all of the Independence Day fireworks shows staged by the cities below at nightfall. Yet despite the presence of more campers, the summit wasn't as crowded as during the times when most dayhikers were present. I stayed my customary hour at the summit before heading down and met a few dayhikers still straggling up less than one mile down, one group at the junction heading to Etiwanda Peak and the other one switchback down. All the rest coming up were either backpackers and I didn't encounter non-backpacking hikers until about after I had passed the one-mile marker. I got back to my car at around 7 or 7:30 but it was still daylight. This was my fourth time to hike to Cucamonga Peak and I did it on the Fourth of July.
