I tried to do this hike last September but I didn’t get very far. I blamed the altitude, but I hiked Kendrick last month (10,423’) So I thought I was ready. This time I climbed with a friend also doing Humphreys for the 1st time, who has a very positive attitude!
Tough hike for me but not that tough! We got on the trail at 5:45 AM because the monsoon weather was forecasted to kick up after 12 PM.
Four out of the 5 miles of climb went well. The last mile is notoriously rocky, so save your energy for the last push!
We made it! Woohooo! My friend is Navajo and Humphreys is a sacred mountain to her people. She gave prayers to all 4 directions at the top. It was completely fogged in, but she said the Navajo religious beliefs teach that ‘the Holy Ones’ are present and take the form of clouds to protect and greet us. They are a blessing on our journey. I felt very blessed to make it to the highest point in AZ! ????????????

Well done, Peggy! So awesome that you made it. Really cool story about your friend. What a great experience to be up there and share that.
