The weather was perfect and crisp as we started our early summer hike up the first mountain on our list: Mount Baden-Powell. We parked our car, strapped up our boots and made our way up the switchbacks. On our way up we ran into a friendly Ranger who asked us if we had our map and compass on us. When we told him we had a digital map he suggested that next time we also bring a physical map and compass in case the battery on our phone were to run out of battery during an emergency. We stopped for a but halfway up as the terrain evened out and had a quick snack to refuel before continuing our trek up the mountainside. We made it to the top and took our fair share of pictures with the monument and with the wooden sign at the summit. After getting our first round of photos in, we went south from the summit a couple hundred feet and picked a semi-shaded spot to eat lunch in. I brought out the backpacking stove and we cooked some hot dogs and made some Belgian fries at the top which caught the attention of the Ranger again at the summit and gave him a laugh and a smile. We ate our hot dogs and fries, had a mini food coma and took a great nap before packing up and heading back down the mountain. First hike of the six-pack: Success!
