Awesome day! We parked at the Los Coyotes Campground on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, off of Highway 79 and Camino San Ignacio. Adventure Pass is not required, but usage is $10 per person. We arrived before the gate opened at 8am, so we just put the money in an envelope and dropped in the mail slot. The trailhead is a little tricky to find…once the pavement ends and dirt begins, look for a wooden “Los Coyotes” sign nailed to a tree about 6′ up. Find a spot to park, and look for the trailhead to the left of the camping area. There is a small sign on a gate that reads “Sukat Rd.” – you made it!
This trail is pristine, is easy to follow, and seemed rarely used. We came across five other hikers. The first two miles are fairly challenging incline before it levels out, and then another incline area before arriving at the summit. Snow here and there which added to the beauty of the hike. The summit is pretty cool: a surprising amount of near-exposure to the north, a sketchy old fire tower, and big rocks to relax on for a snack. Awesome views from all directions.
Heading back to the trailhead was enjoyable. Total of 9.9 miles with about 2500′ elevation gain. We ate lunch at the Golf Grill at Warner Springs Resort…good comfort food!
During the winter months, I strongly recommend using trekking poles, as the snow can make things slippery. I didn't take crampons today. Take 3L of water, and be ready for cold/windy weather on the summit.
