Hike 1 of 2 this day, with a tour of Old Tucson in between.  Finally day of the 6-Pack of Peaks Challenge.  We stayed the overnight in Tucson and headed to the trailhead in the morning, knowing there was little shade on this hike.  Only shade available, was thanks the the vast amount of Saguaros along the trail (this area being Saguaro National Park.)

The trail itself was slippery in some spots, thanks to lose volcanic (ish) rock.  There was a small stone building you could explore about a mile (or less) into the hike.  We weren’t sure of the historical significance of the structure.  A few switchbacks greet you near the top of the trail, were it will be mostly level to the peak.  Near the last switchback is an old mineshaft that is fenced off with barbed wire.  You can walk down to the front of the fence and look into the old mine.  However, the mine is boarded up, so you don’t see that much.  Still, neat to see.

At the beginning of the short spur that leads to Wasson Peak, we saw our first wild tarantula.  Sadly, it was dead.  Knock on wood, we still haven’t seen any rattlesnakes.  And we intend to keep it that way.  Hey, Indiana Jones was afraid of snakes too, pal.🧐

Atop Wasson Peak, we enjoyed a nice view of the surroundings and Mt. Lemmon.  On our way back, we decided to take the same trail down, as the King Canyon Trail loops around a smaller peak.  Going back was a bit tricky, given the lose rocks.  So, taking your time is key.
