Parked the car and started sweating…
It felt like 90ºF (32ºC) so we were sweating from the get-go. The was steep, beginning to end, with very few opportunities for a rest under the shades. This all pales in contrast with the beauty of the park. The golden stretches from all the cornes and since the sky was a clear blue, you could see very far – all the way to the San Francisco fog.
The incline never really lets up so we took our time on the way up. We brought 80oz of ice cold water for 2 hikers, but half of it was gone by the time reached the 2.5mi mark. They let you know as soon as you start the trail that no potable water is available, so we started rationing it.
After the 2.7 or 2.8mi mark you can see the peak, so it gives you a sense of a finish line, which gave us enough energy to just push through the soreness and cruise to the end.
When you're up there, it's just amazing. You can see across the whole Bay Area, you can see hawks (and hear them too) dancing in the sky and just plummeting to their prey from time to time. It's just an amazing view of the nature around you. We laid there for a while, meditating. Then it was time to go back.
The way down is super easy. After the first few slippery steps, it's just a decline with a soothing wind to cool your face.
Before you know it, you're back to the campus and you can use the restroom to clean your skin and change your sweaty shirt.
