We, my cousin (@wanderlust_kaitlyn) and a co-worker, decided to hike up to Mission peak to catch the sunset. We started from the Ohlone College trailhead, which technically stays open later (so perfect for sunset chasers). It's a steady climb to the top along a pretty wide path. The co-worker who joined us was not as seasoned as a hiker and quickly started to feel the elevation. Luckily this starting point had far more shaded areas then the starting from the Stanford Rd staging area, which made perfect resting spots. Even with the more frequent stops we made it to the top with plenty time to spare to enjoy our summit beers and snap some photos. Along the trail there was plenty of wildlife to gander at countless lizards, cows, turkeys, hawks, and other birds. At our first shaded area we found this little black and white snake meandering through a tree's root system. We also saw/heard some coyotes and caught glimpses of a few bats when making our decent in the dark. The sunset at the top was definitely worth the work to get to the peak. I'd easily rank this hike higher than Umunhum for the views alone.

  1. Great photos, @ktneft! This is the one peak I still need for the 2018 challenge, and I’m planning to do the same route from Ohlone College. I think I’ll shoot for sunset as well. 🙂

    1. I definitely recommend it! I’ve done it both in the morning/late afternoon, but doing it at sunset was definitely most rewarding and worthwhile.

  2. Wow, sounds like fun! Nice pictures, too. 🙂 Which trail did you take on your way down? The same one?
