This is the place Ralphie's mother bundled up the little brother for. It might not be the snow-frosted winter of A Christmas Story, but it was bloody close. The bad news? Hike – actually closer to 26-28 miles, including Modjeska, to boot. 13+ miles in the rain. Did I mention THE WEATHER? So windy and cold at Santiago's summit, that to steal a quote from the eminently quotable Bill Murray (via Groundhog Day): “Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today.” I found the surveyor's summit mark, had time to snap a couple more pics of the towers, then skedaddled on my way after a few minutes. Never mind a selfie in that wind! And no amount of waterproofing will keep out hours of rain, and multiple stream-on the-trail crossings, no matter what Gore-tex claims. 🤣 That being said, if you want to challenge your hiking mettle, and really push yourself to your limits, this is the place to do it. And 03/19/23 was definitely the date to do it on. The view of the SoCal snow-capped mountains was spectacular, and the later, rolling fog on the trail gave the hike a great bit of drama. I saw only a couple of other hikers, a few mountain bikers, and a couple of dirt bikers, so it's like the road and the mountain are solely yours. Just make sure to leave yourself a thermos of a piping hot beverage at your vehicle, to toast your well-deserved accomplishment, after a long, wet, and grueling day. You deserve the 👏👏👏🎆🎆🎆

What a frigid adventure!
You betcha – beautiful views, but that wind was pretty brutal at the transmission towers. Wish I could have sat on my backpacking camp chair for a break up there, but not this time.
What was ur trailhead
Maple Springs Visitor Center. I’d advise either waiting until gate there is open (if you want shorter hike), or bring a few pairs of socks. The stream is running pretty solid.
