We started our ascent of Ontario Peak at 6:30am on a beautiful Saturday morning. We arrived at the parking lot just after six am and there only a few spots left which is not surprising considering the popularity of this trailhead. The trail through Icehouse Canyon is very rocky compared to other hikes included in the challenge, so keep that in mind when planning your hike. Also, Icehouse Canyon does have a lot of mosquitoes which can take away from your ability to enjoy the tranquility of the stream. I would recommend to bring a mosquito net, it does help tremendously because personally I hate when mosquitoes are in your face. We finished our ascent at 10:39am with my Apple Watch tracking the distance traveled at 7.07 miles and 3,500ft of elevation gained. The summit has great views of the Inland Empire and also Mt. Baldy to the back side. We started our descent at 11:36am and arrived back to the car at 3:03pm. Overall, this hike is tough with some steep switchbacks and rocky sections that can challenge even experienced hikers, but the views are worth it. Just one peak left for myself to finish this year’s challenge!!
