We hiked up from Chantry Flat, taking the Winter Creek trail. Beautiful weather, a little cool, so none of the bugs we'd been warned about encountering on this lovely wooded trail were around. Although All Trails offered this hike at 11.1 miles, everyone in my group recorded our hike at slightly over 14 miles. For the last two miles the shade of the trees is behind you, but the views are fantastic, even on a partly cloudy day. The final stretch winds up through the burn area, parallel to the road, towards the summit (the trail is above the road, that juncture is not marked) and we arrived in the parking lot of the observatory. There are bathrooms!

I’ve tracked this loop at just a hair under 14 miles using GaiaGPS. As a reminder, we have detailed guides to all the Six-Pack of Peaks hikes linked on this page: http://socialhiker.net/six-pack-peaks-challenge/southern-california/
It includes downloadable GPX files that you can use with AllTrails or GaiaGPS or whatever GPS app/device you prefer. 😉
Thank you! Have been hiking with a group and there seems to be a fair amount of discrepancy in the mileage and elevation logged on each of our All Trails apps – even though we’re on the same trail.
This is my first time with the series – lots to learn! Having the time of my life!
