So I feel like Mt Wilson gets kind of a bad rap…I never had much interest in hiking it due to the reviews ect and did the alternate instead in the 6 pack challenge back in January…but I’ve decided to do all 8 (hopefully finishing the end of this month) so I tackled it today. And it was amazing! Totally not what I was expecting! First of all it was much more intense than i expected 14.6 miles, 4547 ft elevation gain was my stats, and that s*** was pretty knarley! Also, maybe it was just the weather today, but it felt like we were walking through an enchanted forest, there was a heavy mist we hiked through the whole time and everything was super green and magical looking and much of it was hiking next to and over a creek. Made it up above the clouds, and the view was nothing but misty forest and thick clouds with mountain peaks poking out of the top, much better than the view of LA in my opinion. The summit was not very exciting, but we were already expecting that. It’s also awesome that it’s a loop so you see different sights on the way down. All together we saw tons of newts, a beautiful waterfall, a historic camp retreat, a bobcat, and heard what we were pretty sure were loud mountain lion kitten screams (almost back to the parking lot by this time thankfully lol) So basically what I was expecting to be a lame urban hike actually turned out to be a very memorable and beautiful hiking experience. Just wanted to share in case anybody feels the way I did about Wilson! Happy hiking ?

  1. I totally agree with you about Mt Wilson getting a bad rap. Yeah, the top is not very “peak like” and it’s kinda demoralizing the see “pedestrians” who drove to the summit, but the hike itself has a lot of wonderful beauty. I’m so glad you enjoyed it, too! 🙂
