Great but challenging hike.  Started from Juniper Campground on Deer Flat Road.  Left the lot by about 0915 and it was clear and cool.  Great wildflowers after all the rain.  Right on Meridan Ridge trail for a jaunt downhill, cross Deer Flat Creek and then up hill to Prospectors Gap Trail.  Quite steep going up to the saddle where the trail meets North Peak Rd.  Took the short detour to the top of North Peak which is covered in microwave towers, but has a great view!  Super steep up to the peak where a peanut butter and honey sandwich was happily consumed.  Back down to the trail intersection and went up North Peak Trail towards Mt. Diablo summit.  Saw a small rattlesnake about halfway up.  It was angry and rattling, so we gave a wide berth and kept going.  More uphill to the lower parking lot and up to the visitor's center for the view and a cold Gatorade.  Back down Juniper Trail to the campground.  Great hike with wonderful views, flowers and very tired legs!
