Right away there was snow/ice in patches that we had to cross. Once we were about a half a mile in the ground was pretty much completely covered in snow. Melting in areas which made it slushy. Other areas we were sinking to our knees in. We wore crampons which did help in most areas that were well packed still. Got to Mt. Pinos in about an hour and a half. Decided to travel further on to Sawmill Mountain. That's where things were even more difficult. Lost the trail several times because of the snow cover. Basically just scaled down the mountain in the general direction we needed to go. The second summit was pretty steep, took several breaks because the snow was so deep and exhausting. Very rewarding at the top. Looked like a winter wonderland. All in all we did 10 miles in 7 hours! Great challenging day!
