Wow what a hike! Final stats via Gaia GPS: climbed 4,741 feet, 14.1 miles total. I started the hike with my husband at the Mt. Wilson trailhead in Sierra Madre a little before 6:30 am. I read, “climbs over 3,500 feet in just five miles” on the trail description beforehand; boy it was not kidding haha! It was a RELENTLESS climb for 7 miles with a couple of obstacles in the way to make it even more fun (e.g., couple washout areas, fallen trees on the trail, minor water crossings). Lots of grey squirrels, acorn woodpeckers, and beautiful scenery once you get further up. I would recommend starting early on a sunny day because it does warm up pretty quick while walking along the ridge. You get such a rewarding view once you reach the top, plus you might catch some white-throated swifts feeding. We got lucky and it was such a clear day that we could see all of LA to Mt. San Jacinto. Cosmic Cafe is closed until end of March, but there are bathrooms and water available at the top. We spoke with a couple of other hikers at the top who stated they used the Chantry Flats trailhead so it might be open again… Other than that, I would definitely recommend this route if you want a crazy climb with rewarding views. Can’t wait for Cucamonga next!
