Got started 30mins before sunrise, which is the best way to go with this particular hike. The first 2.5 miles are in shade in that case (and, still mostly in shade on the way back, if you turn quickly enough). The final 1.45 miles are of course very difficult, gaining most of the overall altitude. But a very nice day with not much traffic on the mountain. Note that the road is closed right *after* the Redbox trailhead so you can get there and park from the LA/Glendale side.
