Third peak of the #sixpackofpeakschallenge lowkey this hike was hard LOL. If your cardio is not on point, then you’re gonna hop on the struggle bus all the way to the top 😂 Coming back down was better tho 😬 Bring lots of water, at least 3L! #hiking #socalhikes #socal6packofpeaks

Date: Friday, July 1, 2022

Weather: Hot/Sunny with a little breeze

Parking: Park at trailhead and street parking. Pass required.

The morning we arrived, the road to the trailhead was closed because there was a helicopter flying over the area. They told us it would be closed for 45 minutes, so we were off to a late start for our hike. Eventually, they let us pass and the park ranger told our group, “Do me favor? Please be careful” :O That's definitely not a great way to start the hike, but managed to make it out okay!

If you are not an avid hiker, then you will find this hike pretty challenging, at least getting to the top. This hike will definitely test your cardio level. This was my first 12+ miles hike and the elevation gain happened very quickly, which is why I was so out of breath!

After beginning the trail and passing a few signs, there will be an open space where cars can park. You will be inclined to take the trail on your right — don’t go that way lol. The trail will be to your left and there’s a small sign beside it. You can make your way back to the main trail if you went right, but you will cross over some rocks to get back on trail. The trail for the first few miles or so was mostly shaded. You’ll pass by cabins and a soothing creek.

After ~3.4 miles, you’ll see a sign pointing LEFT for Chapman TR. NO. 237W07, Cedar Glen (2.5 mi), and Icehouse Canyon (4.7 mi) and to the RIGHT: Icehouse Canyon TH. (3 mi), and Icehouse Saddle (0.6 mi). Take Ice House Saddle (0.6 mi). The trail will start to feel like a normal hike with a temporary break from the elevation gain.

As you climb up, you’ll be met with about 4+ fallen trees that you’ll have to climb under or over to continue the trail. Going back down, while faster, felt like it took forever. The last three miles felt like it went on forever! We started around 10:08 AM and made it to the top around 2:30 PM, had lunch, and then arrived back down around 6:15 PM. I always add 30 min – 1 hr on whatever the average time it takes to complete a hike on this app, since I always take a break for lunch. Pack at least 3L of water. My friends ran out of their camelbacks and I just about finished my 3L and brought an extra 32 oz for them. Pack a lunch to enjoy at the top. There is a tiny section with shade underneath the iconic leafless tree.
