Bagged two peaks this weekend.
Our alarm went off at 3am so we could be geared up and on Icehouse Canyon trail by 5am. While we thought we'd be under headlamps, the solstice provided just enough light to get an early start and help beat the heat
The climb to the saddle is a brisk 2,500′ climb in 3 miles that puts you at the base of 5 different trails. We tackled Ontario Peak first, which is another 1,000′ in just over 2 miles.
While we had to battle an inordinate amount of flies, we were feeling pretty frisky and decided to tackle Bighorn Peak on our way back. Whoops.
The climb to that peak is steep and the sun had come up bringing the heat. But bag it we did and decided to run the ridge down the backside to the saddle via the trail shown on AllTrails.
That trail quickly disappeared and instead, we scampered down a grove of overgrown manzanitas on a very steep, crumbly slope.
But like cats, we eventually land on our feet and we made it back to the car safely for a very well deserved beer followed by a tasty margarita.
This is our 29th hike of the year as we are more than halfway to our goal of 50.
