If Cucamonga Peak is the land of the never-ending switchbacks, then Ontario Peak is the land of the false summits. This was my first time to hike this peak and like the Cucamonga Peak hike three days earlier was done from the Icehouse Canyon trailhead. The morning started out inauspiciously with sunny weather but when I got to the Saddle I saw clouds over Mt. Baldy. Since they didn't seem to be moving south I continued up to Ontario Peak passing by Kelly Camp and going on the ridge. Although I had anticipated the “false summits” having read the write-ups, it still didn't prevent irritation and frustration at having to ascend what seemed to be the summit only to go down again and this happened three times. As I got close to the peak, to my consternation the clouds earlier had moved in my direction but as I was already on the last few feet from the summit I proceeded to the summit. Shortly after several other hikers arrived and we each took each others photos but due to the impending rain we decided to head down after a quick rest. On the way down we got caught in the rain – on the ridge before the descent to Kelly Camp. Fortunately I had a rain jacket packed so I just put it on and continued. At Kelly Camp I stayed for a few more minutes as the rain had abated while the other hikers continued on their way down. Later I decided to head down myself. Only a few hikers were on the trail. On the way down close to the two-mile mark I met a few backpackers on the way up to Kelly Camp. I hiked back to the car and that was the end of the day for me.
