Getting a late start on my 6 Pack Peak Challenge this year as this is my first one for 2022. This trail was definitely much easier the 2nd time around. Last summer we hiked it June and it was a scorching hot 90 degrees by 7:30 AM. Start time this time was again 7:30 AM, however the temperature was a perfect 65 degrees. We were the first car in the parking lot and were greeted by a flock of wild turkeys. We didn’t see one human until we were almost finished and a mile from the end. Nice breeze followed us the whole way. We found the hike much easier and pleasant than last summer due to the cooler temperature. Assorted wildflowers, lizards and huge pinecones spotted trailside. We also climbed the beautiful new stone stairway to the final ascent (this was closed last summer for construction and we took the detour route) My 2 adult kids hiked with me. We hiked 8.1 miles in 3.17 hours. Elevation gain 1,188 ft.

Wow! Those turkeys are amazing! I’ve seen wild turkeys on Mount Diablo but never such fine looking birds.
Thanks for the trip report, Diane!
