I actually did volcan mountain a couple weeks ago before I committed to the SD 6 peak challenge, pre snow. Its a beautiful hike, we took the hard way up and went around the Five oak trail coming down. On the way up the first like 1.2 miles is all incline then levels off for a bit then intermittent hills. We saw coyotes and deer from a far. We had lunch on a beautiful bench and its very quite up at the top. There was intermittent residual snow with slippery areas. Altogether a very nice hike, I would rate as moderate.
