Beautiful, quiet, Spring morning in southern Arizona! Had the mountain mostly to myself until heading back down. At the end of my hike I was greeted by a friendly individual who asked me for my time and thoughts in an interview about restoration in the outdoors as part of her collaborative work with Saguaro National Park. Through a grant she and a team of researchers were conducting a study regarding noise pollution and the impact on humans recreating in the outdoors as well as the animals in the environment. I had a nice chat with her and mentioned I love the sign at the trailhead asking people to reduce noise pollution by listening to music through headphones. I explained that even if I love the music someone is listening to out on the trail, I don’t want to hear it. I want to hear the sounds of the natural environment; that’s why I go there – for peace, quiet, and to hear the sounds of nature. She explained that the sign was part of their research and if it’s successful, the park may decide to retain it permanently. I hope they do. 😊
