On Friday, February 9th our crew summited San Bernardino Peak. The weather was perfect for a hike. It was a little chilly in the morning, with a nice cool breeze during the day and the warm sun above. There was still a lot of snow above 8,500ft, which slowed our pace a bit. Near the summit were various tracks headed off in different directions. It was important to follow our map to ensure we were headed in the right direction. Our group of six all made it safely to the summit. Coming down was a little tough as we passed through areas of snow that were now slushy and slippery from the sun melting it. Even with microspikes on we had a few slips and falls, but no injuries. Trekking through the snow is a lot of work but it also makes for a beautiful hike! Everyone was happy to get back to the car after a long day of hiking. Now, time for the next adventure!

  1. Looks like a beautiful day to summit San Bernardino, @carisa-hernandez! Great photos!

I always find that snow slows me way down, partly because I have to be more cautious about my footing, but also because each step can either take more effort (deep snow) or cause slippage. Always good to plan for extra time vs a nice dry trail.
