I drove up about 5.5 miles past the Maple Springs Visitor Center and parked at the wider portion of the road before starting my hike. Maple Spring and Main Divide are fire roads. There were lots of off-road vehicles, some dirt bikes and bikers. Very few hikers. I was able to find a trail soon after where Joplin meets the Main Divide that takes you straight to Santiago Peak along the ridge, instead of following the Main Divide to the peak. That cut out over a mile each way, plus the trail was more . The peak is kind of a disappointment, with lots of communication towers and antennas. If it wasn't to complete the 12-peak challenge, I wouldn't be hiking this peak again. I met a couple of hikers who came up Cadillac and Joplin. They said they were able to find parking at the trailhead – they had talked to a ranger who said that as long as they are not blocking traffic, they wouldn't get any tickets. It sounds like Cadillac/Joplin might be a more interesting than going up a fire road.
