Well, well, well this was the 6th challenge and it needed to get done that day to complete the Six-Peak 🗻 Challenge. We thought easy-peasy after Mt. Baldy last weekend. It would have been too, if the darn gate was open to drive up to the trailhead. We hiked that entire 7.4 mile road just to get the trailhead. Knowing we had to double every mile we climbed for our descent we were crunched for time to make it down before dark. We continued on to the 1st peak Modjeska and took a much-needed break and enjoyed the spectacular views of Catalina Island. We had done almost a 4,000 ft vertical climb already and had to make a heartbreaking decision to turn back to make it down in the light. Safety First. I feel in my heart we did it, we gave it all we had and ended up doing an unplanned 20-mile hike that day, not easy-peasy. Lesson learned; call the ranger station ahead of time to see if the gate will be open. The biggest plus: we had the trail all to ourselves for the entire day with an occasional mountain biker. We didn't have to eat any jeep dust or smell any gasoline on the road. Worth it. I couldn't imagine sharing the road with vehicles and dirt bikes, the gasoline vapors are toxic.
