Trail snow-covered at times – Gear and expertise recommended

This was a fantastic, exciting way to start off the new year and our (m'Lady and I) first stab at officially doing our six peak challenge(s).  With my years of mountaineering and search and rescue work history, I immediately lead my group astray by advising us to not put on our crampons despite the entire trek to Pino Peak being snow and ice covered.  On our way down from Pino, on the saddle and way up to Sawmill we collectively decided it was time, and man did it make the following miles much quicker, easier and safer.  A short while and a second accent later, we found ourselves near what must have been the peak of Sawmill, where yet again, fearless me, assisted by a snow covered landscape marched right past the turn we needed and proceeded to head towards Grouse Peak.  Slowly but surely the snow got deeper and the tracks became fewer, hard to tell how far we had travelled in the snow which at times was knee deep.  At some point it became obvious we had gone much further than our initial X would have had us, based on rough GPS distance travelled.  I asked my group, my lady and her mother, to wait while I scouted ahead to the next high point to get some bearings, a few minuets later I found myself alone at a clearing with a pile of stones and a decision that I had definitely missed a turn.  Nothing like trying to make a good impression on a woman that might end up being my mother in law, by getting her lost in the cold, snow covered mountains, strong work!  We back tracked a bit then made a bee line off trail for what we all concluded had to be our peak, low and behold, we found it! a few extra miles and a long standing argument now that we actually accidently did the 3-2-1 challenge but it was awesome and fun.  Would definitely do it again.
