This was my first peak summit EVER!!! I chose Sitton Peak as my first to gauge my conditioning level, test my GPS, and not overwhelm myself. Boy was it humbling! The trail was moderately up and down until the final push to the top. My legs were tired from a 2 mile hike at Olinda Oil Museum and 4 mile trail run at Peters Canyon Regional Park yesterday (1/1/2021). They burned from the very first incline! Ugh! The trail was clear and firm. There was evidence of the previous rainstorm, but there was very little actual mud. I had trekking poles which helped A TON! I layered completely wrong. I had the cotton 6 pack of peaks shirt on, a cotton long sleeve over that, and a cotton sweatshirt over that. I also had a beanie and gloves on. The gloves and beanie came off early. I didn't feel overheated, but when I got to the peak and took off my outer layers, they were completely soaked! What a mistake! I wore my light windbreaker on the way down instead of the outer two layers. Much better decision. My Cliff Bar snack at the peak tasted amazing while I looked out over Catalina Island and the ocean. I brought 2x 1L water bottles. I ran out of water with 2.5 miles to go on the descent. I am a heavy sweater and, as a result, need to accommodate better next time. Overall, the hike was AMAZING, everybody on the trail had a smile and was enjoying themselves, and I met several other 6 Pack Challengers! I am greatly looking forward to my next peak…considering Santiago Peak! Farewell Until Next Time! Happy Hiking!
