The hike started at the San Juan Loop Trailhead Parking lot; note that the trail to Sitton Peak is on the opposite side of the road from the parking lot.  The candy store near the trailhead is a true treasure, selling CA adventure passes, candy, water, trail mix, chocolate milk, and all sorts of other delicious treats.  The trail was well marked, and starts with a booth with a sign-in sheet; the trail is free, but they ask that you sign in.  We went in late spring, but it was after a very rainy winter, so the landscape was very green and alive.  Lots of areas of the trail had plant life and brush drooping over the trail around ankle level, so long pants would have been helpful (we wore shorts).  Most of the trail is fairly mild, with the final ~half mile being a steep incline up to the summit.
