Yahoo! My first peak for this challenge. I have been healing a fractured tibia so sitting much of March, April, and some of May . . . thank goodness for chair workouts! Today, however, feeling oh so much better and getting back into shape, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision at 6 am when checking the weather: winds on Rose 5 mph today, tomorrow, 45 mph. Yikes. I have to go. I brought snowshoes and microspikes despite a young man starting out this morning saying Alltrails reviews said spikes are fine. I know better than to trust a stranger! So glad I brought all of my gear. I started on the main trail and within steps I was in and out of snow. I entered the woods (near the junction to Tamarack Peak's use trail), and I was in full snow and route finding. It was NOT impossible to navigate but there is no other option in the drop down for all the snow. I have done this peak multiple times in all seasons, so I have tracks for the winter route. I was actually lower than usual because of the steepness and the ravines. At 7:15 am the snow was icy by afternoon a slushy, slippery mess. The sun cups were deep and tossed me off balance heading out but coming home they kept me from sliding down (I didn't bring an ice ax but was able to self-arrest once using my poles). Once I hit the gully, I was cruising (okay my average moving speed was 1.4 miles per hour for the trek–not great). Nearing the top, I was in rock and snow, then all clear to the top. I met the young man who had left before me in the morning; he tried to follow the actual trail and had some difficulties. Another young man showed up, not wanting to return the way he came. I suggested Relay Peak Road as an option. I'm supposed to start the TRT on July 7, 2023. Might have to adjust plans to start lower down! Hoping for a huge melt despite the temps heading down again next week (lows in the 30s at the upper elevations).

Congratulations! Sun cups can really slow you down. Hope your TRT trip works out!
Thanks! We are flipping the starting point to the East shore, so, fingers crossed, we can do all 165 miles.
