This could not have been a more perfect day for a winter hike; the trailhead was a chilly 34 degrees at 6:30 AM, but the sun was shining and there was no wind. Right away I could feel the effects of a higher altitude and, being my first hike of the season, I was in less shape for a hike of this magnitude. But, with all hikes, I quickly adapted and maintained a good pace.

I stopped at the benches, about 3/4 of a mile up, and put on my microspikes. You will need them; the trail is virtually all snow-covered from this point forward, with just a few spots of exposed trail. As you progress and get up towards the ridgeline after 3 miles, the trail is narrow and there is a fairly precipitous drop on the right. Trekking poles are recommended here.

Although it's only 4 miles to the top, there is a 2,700 ft elevation gain. I found this to be the least strenuous hike of the SixPackofPeaks. Check it out, it's definitely worth waking up at 3 AM and driving 2+ hours from San Diego! Find me on Instagram @jbird2001 for more great photos.
