I went right after a snowfall and I am not a winter hiker. I had yak traks with me but the biggest issue I ran into was the trail not being visible as I made it past the saddle. There were still footprints for me to followed, but then about half way between saddle and summit, the people that left those footprints had turned back at the ridge line. No tracks for me. I still went ahead and followed the gps but not sure if that was the best move considering I was alone and don’t hike in the snow, but it was a very crisp bluebird day. If only I was in Mammoth….
