We reached the summit of snow covered Mt Baldy! On the second attempt.

Attempt 1 was the week prior and heavy cloud cover once we reached above the ski lifts left low visibility. We returned to the ski lodge for lunch knowing we would be back soon again.

The return trip was the following Saturday. Armed with better weather and better gear (we were more prepared for the snow this trip), off we went!

The hike took us through Devil's Backbone which we learned had been closed earlier in the week. We took our time through some of the narrow paths as it was snow/ice/mud covered throughout. The recent warmer weather made for some slush in areas.

For this time of year, we could not have asked for better weather. The peak was in the 30's but the wind sat down nicely by the time we reached the summit. The rest of the hike was a comfortable 40's – 50's (F).

We had micro spikes and trekking poles. We saw many hikers with ice picks – something we will consider for the next snow hike. During the trip we saw a few back country skiers (wow) and as we were descending we watched a group ascending the peak straight up the snow field of Baldy Bowl.

This is peak 1 of 6. Until next time…
