What a beautiful day for a hike to Ontario Peak. It snowed a few days ago so the last 3 miles of the trail had a coating of about 2 inches. Additionally the switchbacks were persistently icy for at least 1.5 miles before the saddle. All of this is to say, the trail was lovely and passable as long as you are prepared for your adventure. The hike was perfect and beautiful BUT you need to bring appropriate gear including microspikes. I saw people in snow in sneakers sliding all over the place and this is a real hike with real drops. It was much quieter than in the summer and I got the trail above the saddleto myself for at least an hour. Highly recommend this beautiful place conditions allowing. I wouldn't go this week though, as bigger storms are forecast and the peak will be dangerous for inexperienced winter hikers.
