Strawberry Peak March 9, 2019 – Saturday – first time on this trail.
Hiked Strawberry Peak Saturday after Fridays Joes Jackson concert at the Orpheum Theater on Broadway. Stayed overnight at the dog friendly Hilton Checkers in DTLA. After a bit of a late night – left the hotel before 7 for the nice drive from DTLA to the Red Box Picnic Area. The scenic CA HWY 2 drive was pleasant, and HWY 2 was closed at the Picnic Area so I couldn’t go wrong. Speaking of going wrong I left my paper map at home…but trail was straight forward in planning and I took some screen shots of the trail for backup.
Parked about 730 and there was plenty of room – later when I got back it was full. The Picnic Area has restrooms, nice views and is good all-around spot. When I got there, it was 38 degrees so a little chilly. I crossed the HWY – the trail head is easy to find and got on my way. The trail was in good shape and is well maintained. It provides lots of natural beauty along the way. As advertised the last section is pretty steep but provides a lot of fun. Just was I was getting to the peak the clouds rolled in and shielded the view. But being in the cloud was a unique and fun experience. I have only been hiking as a hobby for three years, but I think hikers are the best people – because I left from the hotel after a late night I didn’t pack any snacks and the hiker I met at the top offered me a pack of trail mx – very cool.
Spent about 20 minutes at the Peak and then started back. I was in time to meet the wife and dog back at the hotel and Lyft to Boomtown Brewery by noon for lunch. Pretty Sweet this great slice of nature less than 40 minutes from DTLA!
Mileage was 7.15 miles, 2:46 hours of moving time, started at 738 and was back at 10:55. Great weekend from Friday’s concert, bagging Strawberry peak as my #3 and walking the dog around the city while having some DTLA playtime – dinner at Coles on 6th love that old place.
