Grueling! We started on the trail at 5:00am. The first 1.75miles climbed through the forest – got our hearts pumping and woke us up a bit. The next 1.25 was a nice little flat portion where we watched the sunrise over broken top – beautiful!! It was a steady climb from mile 3. The grueling part starts at the scree at about mile 4.5. Wow!! I will have nightmares about that portion! The summit was beautiful but smoky. We could only see North and Middle Sister. Had breakfast at the top then started our trek down. Luckily, we hiked on a Tuesday morning so there weren't a lot of people as we made our way down the scree.

  1. Getting an early start is key on a hike like South Sister. And yeah, that screen up to the crater rim was a slog. I was thankful I had my Dirty Girl gaiters on to keep all the debris out of my shoes.
