The unique feature of this hike is not water or flowers – there's no water and very little plant life. This is all about the incredible see-forever vista up top, and the challenge of walking on volcanic rock, aka briquettes. Met a few PCT through-hikers on this early morning hike – we all had the same goal: get through this section before it's like the inside of a hot BBQ. I was the only person on the summit, and the air was quite clear so the vista went forever. Was cool to look over at Black Crater where I'd hiked last week. Start early, bring lots of water, wear sunscreen, enjoy.

  1. Well done, Valoree! What time did you start and finish, and how were the temperatures? That’s a very exposed hike, but it’s also higher than here in town.

  2. On trail at 8am. The reference to BBQ came from a conversation I had as a trail angel dropping 2 PCT guys off at the trailhead. They were hoping to get this section over early to avoid the BBQ effect. Was back at car by 11:30am. I had 2 top layers on almost the entire time – peeled a layer about 1 mile from car. Great morning!
