We (my friend Erik and I ) took the recommended route using trails for the ascent and taking the double track dirt road down. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold.  The trail was difficult. It was almost unrelentingly steep. After all the rains we have had recently the trail was a bit eroded and had a lot of loose rocks that made for unsure footing on much of the sloping trail. I am SOOOOO glad I brought hiking poles. I would say that they are a must for this hike.

The wildflowers were the major highlight of the hike. Meadows of purple and yellow and red flowers were on almost ever hillside. Sadly, it also meant abundant growth of poison oak as well. In most places it did not encroach on the trail but it will soon.

Near the top I was wondering if I could finish (okay, I am not in that great of shape). The steep unending climb had really taken its toll on the way up, but we made it and treated ourselves to an ice cream sandwich at the visitors Center at the top.

The way down, even though largely on a dirt road was hard too for the same reason, lots of loose rocks that rolled under our feet. Once again, the poles helped to prevent a fall.

It was a tough hike but the beautiful flowers and good company made it worth it.
