My fifth peak of the challenge and I picked the perfect day for a hike! After a week of this Spring's first stint of sunny, 80+ degree days, today was a welcome 61 degrees and, for the most part, overcast. We started out at 7 a.m. and finished in four hours. I wouldn't necessarily classify this as a hike, as much as a climb. The differentiating terrain throughout Flatiron keeps it interesting and really sets it apart from the other hikes I've done. It was fun having the challenge of maneuvering up boulders and side-stepping through the basin! Not many people on the trail as we ascended – could be because it was early and still quite cool. However, on the way down, the trail was filled with late starters beginning their ascent.
TIP:Â The markers are very difficult to see (blue/white faded blotches of paint), so just keep left (even though the summit is actually to the right), and you'll be fine! Of course, if you do get off the trail, you'll still get there…it just might be a bit more challenging.
I may have done this hike before, but it was definitely worth repeating. The views are breathtaking and being at the top makes you feel so small! I'll be climbing this mountain yet again, I'm sure. And why not tag on 5024 next time while I'm at it!
You may only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough!
