How does one do a hiking route that starts on the same elevation as Mount Wilson and yet still have a more challenging hike–14 miles one way and approximately 4,200 ft of elevation gain? Oh, and bag an extra peak higher than Wilson in the process? The group 3H (Hiking for Health and Happiness) answered that question by setting up this year's Mount Wilson hike not from Chantry Flats or the Sierra Madre trailhead of the Old Mt. Wilson Trail but at the Red Box picnic area on Highway 2, northwest from Mt. Wilson–the other side of Wilson. With a vehicle staged at the parking lot at Mt. Wilson's summit, the group met up at the Red Box Picnic Area at 4640 ft and then carpooled up the Mt. Wilson road less than half a mile to the Bill Reilly trailhead at 4750 ft. Ricardo, our hike coordinator then showed on the map where the route would be: first hike up to the summit of San Gabriel Peak at 6161 ft then descend to Markham Saddle (5270 ft) then head via the Mueller Tunnel back to the Mt. Wilson road (5090 ft) then take the Valley Forge Trail to the Gabrielino Trail (3480 ft) then hike east to West Fork (3050 ft) and Devore Campgrounds (2860 ft) before heading up to Newcomb Pass for the last 3.1 miles on the Rim Trail to Mt. Wilson's summit at 5712 ft. This hike to Wilson would be a point-to-point hike not an up-and-down hike. Wilson would be the end destination of the hike, not the turnaround point, and we would be doing it from the other side. It was a grueling yet rewarding hike. We also had the option to bailout on the Kenyon Devore Trail to head directly to Wilson instead of going through West Fork to Newcomb Pass but none of us opted to do it instead sticking out with the group the whole length and route of the hike. The weather was sunny, clear skies and the much of the trail was shaded. The route was also good in that we came across several streams which helped replenish our water supplies with the help of water filters. It was about 4:00pm when the last of us arrived at the Cosmic Cafe and just in time too since they close at 5:00pm. We felt tired yet good that we conquered the peak that was Wilson and also got to hike it from the north instead of from the south. After taking our pictures, those who drove in the carpools earlier in the morning, took the staged vehicle back to trailhead to pick up the other vehicles and then return to pick the rest of us for the ride back to the Red Box parking lot. A unique and excellent start to the Six-Pack.
