One of my favorites of all time. Since you do most of the work driving up to the Mount Pinos campsite, most of the hike is travelling to the mountain with only a small amount of elevation gain. The first quarter is a lovely walk through the trees with Mount Pinos as a good rest place. It has plenty of historical plaques to read about the area and the Native American tribe who lived there. Then you descend along a switchback and walk along a short ridge to the actual side of Sawmill. From there you follow the path and look for a group of sticks guide you to a split off to the right which leads to the peak itself. It has a lonely cairn marking the peak with a spectacular view of the central valley. I highly recommend this hike and suggest taking friends to have them experience this awesome part of nature.
