Hike Log

Thought we were hiking in the snow, but it turned into a Mountaineering Challenge

Trailhead:

Baldy Bowl

Type of Hike:

Day hike

Trail Conditions:

Trail in good condition

ROAD:

Road suitable for all vehicles

Bugs:

No bugs

Snow:

Trail snow-covered at times – Gear and expertise recommended

Hazards were prevalent from the start:

Helmet – needed for falling ice from tree
Ice Axe – to arrest falls
micro spikes- to make walking in the snow easy and prevent slips
Trekking Poles- for keeping balance on unstable slopes
Parking around 5:50am was sparse so get their earlier for a good spot. We made it to the Ski Hut around 9:00am and conditions were slightly cloudy. Bring appropriate layers is a must for this hike.  We became our ascent around 9:45am and saw the weather grow harsher with each for in elevation gain. Conditions were white out. As we made our way up we saw many groups of people abandon the trek to the peak for lacking appropriate equipment and layers. The peak was very windy and cold. Make sure you have a good outer shell. We began our dissent around 12:20pm and enjoyed glissading down the mountain to the ski hut. Around 2:00pm
