It was our first attempt at succeeding at the summit of Ontario Peak. The rumors of arriving early are not a myth… we showed up at the trailhead promptly at 5:30 and there was only a couple of spots left. In between, some visitors were sitting in spaces holding them for larger groups who have not yet arrived. The trail was in great condition, with only minor obstacles (fallen trees, jagged rocks) to encounter but otherwise in great shape. The first hike up to the saddle is a stretch, but this is a great spot to recoup and get your bearings, before making the decision of which direction to go. Here is where the trail splits into either direction of Cucamonga Peak Ontario Peak, and Bighorn. Bring plenty of water, still somewhat cool mornings but once the sun comes out it gets hot pretty quickly! The trail is snow-free aside from little pieces left of winter off to the sides of the trail on occasion. This trail has such great energy we met so many really great hikers. The change in scenery is wonderful as within your journey you will encounter many different views. The view from the first “fake” summit is so cool, especially if you catch the valley below. Lunch at the peak was incredible. Again, this was our first attempt, many times where it got tough, but it is 100% achievable with positive outlooks and determination.
