Nice weather, suprisingly not a spec of snow. The loop from Chantry Flats ended up being around 17ish miles

  1. Looks like you had a great hike with no snow. My group is hiking this on Saturday 3/24. What trails did you follow to log 17 miles? The GPX file I found only shows 12.5 miles…I worried if we have to go 17 miles. That sounds like torture.

  2. Yeah I too thought it would be 12.5 miles I think if you go out and back rather than the loop that would be accurate. We started on the upper winter creek to mt Wilson trail..I don’t think there’s much of a difference between upper and lower winter creek trail heads. Then came back down the “Sturtevant trail to chantry flats” on the other side of the observatory. I have a feeling that some of the mile marker signage isn’t so spot on.
    You could cut across at the mt Zion summit trail, but I’m sure that’s not any easier.
