Trail “opens” at 0800 but there were a few people on the trail before then. Check the weather and make sure you have layers. It was windy and extremely foggy. fleece/puffy coat, gloves and the like are great easy to pack assets. Saw a coyote, deer, rabbit, and a few large land insects if you're watching carefully.
If you want the beautiful views from the summit go later in the day, different time of year, or just watch for fog reports. That said, the views of the hike itself were amazing. Fast moving fog rolling over the hillside, through the trees, and just the whistling of the wind. I chose the “Five Oaks” parallel trail on the way down. It is windy, more narrow, and adds a little distance to the hike. Great views off the side of the mountain too.
Make a day of it! Being right next to Julian reward yourself with some wine tasting, cider house visits, good grub, and of course some warm apple pie.
Cheers!
