Mt. Woodson is the 3rd peak Koa has summited in 2021. This very popular and often crowded trail, also known as Potato Chip Rock, is located in the city of Poway. We summited via Lake Poway. This entrance is part of the Poway Lake park so make sure you check the parking lot hours as the gates do close on a schedule. Trail stats according to AllTrails: 7.6 miles, 2,112ft elevation gain, moderate. Views include Lake Poway and the surrounding areas. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the ocean. The iconic Potato Chip rock is located just prior to the summit. Be prepared to wait in line for a picture. We headed up on a weekday to avoid the crowds. It also turned out to be the hottest day of the week, an 80-90 degree winter day in Socal. This trail doesn't offer much shade so make sure to bring sun protection and a lot of water. Koa and Zoe needed quite a few breaks on the way back down. To top it off, we ran out of water 2 mi from the finish. We definitely could not survive Naked & Afraid. The final uphill leading to the water fountain seemed eternal. Koa really enjoyed running up and down the boulders. Though on the more difficult side, the views are worth the climb. He definitely earned his Happy Meal that day. Keep On Adventuring!
