I have been in the same dilemma this last week. I'm considering just going it alone this weekend (maybe Sunday after the rains) It's probably only going to rain more over the next 2 months or so (historically speaking). That just means even more snow is in the future at higher elevations, and I don't want to wait for late summer for everything to melt. I'll be back in Europe by then. Anyway, I can always turn around and try again later if it's unsafe.
Looking at hiking Cucomonga this Saturday for Peak#2.Aside from being cold anyone know if there is snow up there? Would we need crampons?
I'm thinking of doing the same.
It looks like it's getting some more snow tomorrow and maybe Friday.

Now that the differences between crampons and micro-spikes have mainly been addressed, I would like to expand on the question for everyone if that's ok?

What micro-spikes do you recommend, or not recommend? I'm looking to purchase some for my wife and I. User experience from here would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

Tyler, as for microspikes, I'm a big fan of the Kahtoola microspikes. Both my wife and I have them and swear by them.
Thanks Jeff! Those are the ones I was looking at. I wear a size 14 lowa renegade. It looks like I'm on the middle line between sizes L and XL (unfortunately that seems to be the case with almost anything for me)
    Large fits Men's shoe sizes 10.5 – 14
    X-Large fits Men's shoe sizes 14 – 16
Is it better to have a tighter fit at the end of the size? Or a looser fit at the beginning? I probably wouldn't know until I was on the trail even if I tried them on first.
Thank you so much Tyler! That is very helpful. I spent some time yesterday, reading, cutting, pasting and printing out maps. I cannot wait! I will post about our hike on Monday morning while I put my legs up and sip some coffee.
No problem! Glad that helped. Just remember if you come down the side I was talking about that starts at the parking lot below the cosmic cafe (its very burnt from the fires), you will see the back of the hogees camp and chantry flat sign first. So when I say it's a left, that is a left as if you are facing the sign reading it. Also just so you know, if you go up the mountain the same way that takes you to the falls, there is plenty of places to filter water and an actual refill station at the top and at least one on the trail I think (look in the campgrounds). I wouldn't have carried as much water if I had know that, but the 3 liters I took lasted me to the top with about a half liter to spare and I drink a lot of water. My wife on the other hand drank only a little over a liter ascending so how much water to take is all relative to you, Just know you will be able to fill up at certain points.
Hello all! First, thank you for the details. I am doing my first of the 6 at Mt. Wilson this weekend. I know this area because I have been to the falls a couple times. I would like to NOT have to take the cement road all the way back up the hill to Chantry. Is there a sign I should look for to take the trail near the old toll road so I end at the picnic table area? I think I am most nervous about coming down the Mountain since I have read several times that the signage is not good.

Advise and knowledge please. Thank you so much!
My wife and I did mt Wilson this last Saturday. We hiked up mt Wilson the way that leads to sturtevant falls, and when we descended we went down the side that you enter from the parking lot below the cosmic cafe at the peak. From there it's pretty straight forward, then eventually you get to a sign that says “hogees camp” and “chantry flat” if your looking at the sign it sends you left for chantry flat and that is the way we went. It seems like you made a wrong turn or something because it sends you up for a bit after going down, but you end up looking down on the parking lot and coming off trail above the general store. I hope that helps, sorry I don't remember all the details on the signs and the trail names. Someone with more experience can probably help you here and there is tons of friendly people on this trail to ask for directions.
