Hips, thighs, hamstrings, knees, calves; all are in good shape. I’m ready for this mountain! Oh wait, the feet aren’t though. Okay, maybe it was a little more to do with newer boots that needed more than 2 short hikes and 2 days at work for a full break in period, but dang that hurt more than I expected. I’ve logged a lot of miles since the 1st of the year and I’m disappointed in my feet. Wish I could trade them in for some upgrades. However, those boots felt good. Nope, I’m blaming it on the boots. Lesson learned.

I started out just after 7 am and the parking lot wasn’t too crowded so the trail was moderately filled with people, but there were plenty at the top upon my arrival. It appears that a lot of people spend the night on Gorgonio. Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe next time.

The temperature at the top was nice. Probably in the low to mid 70’s with some wind so it was nice to just lay back and relax in the sun after that grueling last 2 miles in that thin atmosphere. While sitting on a comfortable rock eating my trail lunch, I was greeted by a hungry chipmunk. It seems he was very used to showing his cute little face to summiters in hopes of getting a bite to eat. He bolted once he saw I was more interested in taking his picture than giving him my food. However, I did leave him a tiny piece of bread for later.

I met some real nice people on the trail during this hike, including several 6POPer’s. Most seemed to be training for Mt Whitney or the JMT or something similar. Wish I had something to tell them in return. For now, I haven’t made any solid plans other than I’ll be somewhere in the Eastern Sierras before the end of the summer. Maybe I’ll run up a do a quick one day to the top of Whitney. Whatever I chose to do, I know I’m ready. Although my feet may have different ideas. I don’t care, I’m still going somewhere. I have the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge to thanks for some of that preparation. So, what’s next? I love Baden-Powell so much, maybe I’ll complete the alternative peaks. I’ve got buddies that are working on completing the challenge, so I’ll be along for support for sure.

I have always loved the mountains and the beauty they provide us. Hiking them bring me health and strength, stress relief, happiness and closer to God. We are a blessed people in a blessed land. I am so grateful for the freedoms that we enjoy in our country and I thank those who have defended and worked to maintain that freedom.

Happy hiking to all. See you on the trails and God bless America!

    1. Thanks, Jeff! And you just may see another hike or two ? appear on my wall in the next day or two. Hiked on Catalina Island at boy scout camp just over a week ago. That’s gotta count for something extra for the SoCal 6pop!
